Holy Mahamaham tank
The city is famous for the Mahamaham festival
that is celebrated once in 12 years in the
Mahamaham tank located in the heart of it.
Sankara Mutt
The Sankara Mutt was shifted to Kumbakonam
around 200 years ago. It is positioned on
the banks of River Cauvery and conducts
regular Vedic classes and religious discourses.
Veda Patasala
Established by the Tanjore Maharaja in
the 17th century, the Veda Patasala is 300
years old. Traditionally dressed students
can be seen taking Veda classes in the premises.
The institution is a must see for one and
all.
Sri Kasi Vishwanathar
Temple
Appreciated by Sambandhar in his work
'Devaram', the temple offers to see statues
of Navakannigas, the nine rivers. Exquisite
sculptures can be seen in the corridors.
Ragavendra Mutt
This place is considered to be holier
than Mantralaya, where the brindavan of
the Guru of Raghavendra's Guru seen in the
southern side Cauvery. Saint Raghevendra
is believed to have visited this place.
Though devotees come here daily, huge crowd
gets together on Thursdays.
Chakrapani Temple
It is the second Vaishnavite
temple in Kumbakonam town. Here the main
deity is Chakraraja and Sudharshana Chakra.
This temple is considered to be one of the
most important Vishnu temples in South India,
along with Srirangam and Tirupati. Seven
of the Alwars sang the glories of this temple.
Lord Sarangapani is the presiding Deity
of the temple.
Sri Nageswaran Temple
Appar has sung praises of the temple.
The temple has wide corridors and has excellent
carvings and beautiful statues. A big attraction
for tourists is the chariot with Nataraja's
''Anands Thandavam'' pose.
